A group of scientists of Cambridge University have invented a device that can clean dirty water and convert it into hydrogen fuel. About the groundbreaking device, it is mentioned detailed in a research paper titled 'Hybrid Photothermal-Photocatalyst Sheets for Solar Driven Overall Water Splitting Coupled to Water Purification', published Monday in the science journal Nature Water.

According to the report of the British daily Independent, the device is inspired by the process of 'photosynthesis' of plants, with a carbon mesh used to absorb light and heat, as well as a water-optimized system, and hydrogen fuel is produced through a 'photocatalyst'.

"In this process, we're able to use light in a better way than ever before - we're getting steam to produce hydrogen in it, and even the rest is water," said Shannon Porrangroz, a professor of chemistry at the University of Cambridge and co-author of the paper, a member of the team that invented the device. Awe are also getting steam. In this way we have now added respiration, making it possible to simulate real leaves as well.

The researchers behind this groundbreaking invention say that, the system is easy to build, making it possible to work with especially highly polluted water. They added that while the device is still at a theoretical stage, it will play an important role in a sustainable future.
